City Year Columbus

About

How They Help

How do your programs or services help the community?

City Year works closely with the school principal and teachers to determine which students need extra help, then implements individualized, data-driven solutions for each “focus list” student while providing support to the entire school community. City Year AmeriCorps members serve all day, every day throughout the school year to ensure that students are receiving the support they need both in and out of the classroom.

As a result, 85% of students in grades 6-9 improved at least 1 letter grade, 91% improved their attendance, and 80% of their teachers agreed that the City Year Columbus program helped the students’ overall academic performance.

Program Descriptions

Near-peer Tutoring: provides extra care to students who are at risk of dropping out of school. City Year tutors, also known as Corps members, help bridge the gap between the attention a student needs and the attention their school is able to give him or her. City Year Columbus tutors encourage their students to go to school more often, improve their students’ overall behavior, and help their students in key courses like English and math.
